Bounded scope is a product decision. We are building around conventional operating-business returns, with a clear distinction between a supported case, an unresolved fact and a different class of tax problem.
We would rather make a defined preparation path work well than make every ordinary return carry the complexity of every possible exception.
“Straightforward” still includes meaningful professional judgment. A conventional business can have payroll, several owners, shareholder loans, inventory, rentals and assets. The useful question is whether its facts fit the supported profile—not whether the return is small.
The current profile uses one to five unchanged individual owners. Trust/entity shareholders, midyear ownership changes, multiple stock classes, former-C issues, unusual reorganizations and broader final/amended lifecycle work are outside it. A genuine initial S year is supported only within its reviewed formation and opening-state boundaries.
02
International and specialized attachments
The engine does not calculate international tax or render official K-2/K-3. It has a bounded, reviewed domestic-exception procedure. Specialized credit, disclosure and international forms need their own models and output before they can be called supported.
03
The owner’s complete individual tax result
Corporate K-1 amounts are reported before owner basis limitations. Supported Form 7203 work is a separate shareholder deliverable. Personal at-risk, passive, excess-business-loss, final section 179 and QBI limitations are not a substitute for a Form 1040 engine.
04
Complex inventory and investment systems
Established eligible section 471(c) inventory methods are supported; LIFO, complex production, full UNICAP and method changes are not. Capital-sales support uses reviewed known-basis lots and supplied adjustments. It does not maintain every unsold holding or independently detect wash sales across accounts, crypto or derivatives.
05
Every asset, vehicle or rental arrangement
There are bounded depreciation, disposition, listed-property and amortization paths. They do not constitute a broad vehicle fleet, leasing or fringe-benefit valuation system. Self-rentals, personal-use allocations, complex rental services and real-estate sales are outside the present rental profile.
06
Universal document understanding
The current parsers recognize supported structured exports and bounded text-PDF layouts. They do not use an LLM, OCR or arbitrary-format understanding. Unrecognized material remains evidence to review; manual workpapers exist, but not every failed import or complex source conflict has a complete recovery path today.
07
Every jurisdiction and filing step
The public engine evidence concerns federal TY2025 preparation in the stated profiles. It does not establish broad state-return support, e-filing, transmission, signatures, extension or election filing, or IRS acceptance. A generated review package is preparation output.
WHEN THE FACTS DON’T FIT
The software should know when to say no.
Unknown and unsupported are different. An unknown fact may be resolved by further evidence. An unsupported structure may require a different preparation path. Neither should be disguised as zero or “not applicable.”
The same distinction applies to an incomplete source. A document can be retained without every number becoming a trusted input. Corrections must preserve the original, and conflicting evidence must remain visible.
These boundaries will develop as the project does. Expansion means adding the tax model, the review experience, the actual output and the regression work together.
